New Stone Circle New Stone Circle began April 4th, 1994, by Mary Lucille Hays and Karen Kowalski Singer. After eight years and nine issues the magazine went on a six year hiatus. Mary's son, Dylan Heath, had gotten used to seeing submissions coming through the mail and going unread and didn't think about it for a long time. Until June 2008, when he saw a submission letter on the counter. A NOTE FROM FORMER EDITOR, MARY HAYS: New Stone Circle, 13, passed peacefully from this life at 9:37 a.m. June 27, 2008 at Birdland after a long slumber. New Stone Circle was born on April 5, 1994, in an Urbana, Illinois coffee shop. Her life was devoted to providing a voice for writers and artists from all over the world. In 2000, for her fifth anniversary issue, art director, Michael Hoag created an original drawing for the cover of every copy of the magazine. Monica Drake’s story, “Models I Know,” was published in her first issue and went on to win an Alligator Juniper Prize in Fiction in 1996. She also published work by ZZ Packer, Lin Lifshin, Lucille Day, Renice Wernette, Wayne Hogan, and Scott Peters. She hosted the annual Modest Contest, presenting hundreds of dollars in prize money to both established and emerging writers. In 1999, she was honored with a Pipistrelle “Best of Small Press” Award. She is survived by her founding editors, Mary Lucille Hays and Karen Kowalski Singer; art director, Michael Hoag; 126 contributors; and hundreds of supporters and readers.
